Living History" fundraiser is Aug. 4, 5

The Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence, Va., will sponsor a Living History encampment Aug. 4 and 5 as part of the fundraising program to renovate the Civil War Monument which sits on the front lawn.

The 50th Virginia Company D will create an authentic presentation of camp life during America's most divisive conflict -- the Civil War. The camp will open to the public at 8 a.m. both mornings and, on Saturday, will culminate with a candlelight tour of the camp.

The 50th Virginia Company D is a family-oriented, non-political organization that enjoys many activities associated with re-enacting. As much excitement is associated with the re-enactment camps as with the battles. The company is comprised of people from all walks of life who share the same fascination with the Civil War and admiration for the courage of those who fought it. The company is active from Spring until fall participating at various community events, mostly throughout the Midwest.

The Confederate re-enactment unit was founded by the Wade family for the purposes of portraying Civil War historic events and to honor those men who served the 50th Virginia including their ancestral grandfather, Capt. James L. Bishop. The company was formed when, upon Virginia's secession from the Union, a militia group of soldier farmers from Grayson County called Wilson Rifles marched to Wytheville to volunteer thus becoming Company D of the 50th Virginia Regiment Infantry.

Join us in this enriching historical event honoring the history of the Civil War. Admission is free but the Historic 1908 Courthouse Foundation is accepting donations to be used to preserve the Confederate Statue on the lawn.

The Davis-Bourne Inn will offer tours of the home and grounds from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. A $1 admission will be donated to the Statue restoration at the 1908 Courthouse. The inn is the former home of Confederate Col. Alexander M. Davis, who was the leader of Grayson Rifles, Company C of the 45th Virginia Infantry.
