Hurst, Douglas Wayne

Douglas Wayne (Buck) Hurst, of Hillsville, Va., was born in Carroll County on November 27, 1930, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harless Glenn and Arlie B. Hurst. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Jean Hyde Hurst; a son, Wesley Glenn Hurst and wife, Lisa Gail Creed Hurst; a granddaughter, Holly Lauren Hurst, all of Hillsville, Va. He is also survived by a sister, Carolyn H. Quesenberry, of Hillsville, Va.; brother-in-law, George M. Hyde and wife, Janice, of Baltimore, Md.; nephews, David M. Quesenberry, of Dublin, Va., George Michael Quesenberry and wife, Kim, of Livingston, Mont., Mark Wayne Quesenberry, of Hilliard, Ohio, and Michael George Hyde, of Baltimore, Md.; and a niece, Pamela Anne Walenski and husband, Tom Walenski, of Baltimore, Md. The family wishes to acknowledge Alfred L. and Barbara W. Shockley whose frequent visits with Wayne provided fellowship, comfort, and good humor that have been especially helpful during his illness. Alfred and Wayne grew up together and were as close as or closer than many brothers. You could depend on them day or night. The family also wishes to give thanks to the members of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church for their support and prayers, especially the Reverend Kevin M. Campbell and wife, Angela, for their steadfast love and support; and a special life long friend, Mava Vass. Wayne was a long standing member of Hillsville Presbyterian Church and when young, helped lay the church flooring when it was under construction. Wayne served his country during the Korean War in the United States Coast Guard. He served as many Coast Guard Stations, including the North Carolina Coast, Florida, Hawaii, Guam, and Japan. After his discharge he continued his education through the G.I. Bill at Washington County Technical School, receiving diplomas in Architecture Drafting and Masonry. He took great pride in the house plans he created and in his building skills. He built many homes in Carroll County and elsewhere. He taught Building Trades at Carroll County High School for 26 years where "his boys" learned to be square and on the level in life. He retired from teaching in January 1996. Wayne loved Carroll County the people, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. He especially loved standing on his back porch and viewing the Buffalo Mountain. Picnics on the Parkway were his special outing. He delighted in being Holly Lauren's, "Pop Pop." They were great buddies and she still remembers how he taught her to tie her shoes. A Memorial Service will be held 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in the Shockley Cemetery.
